Copyediting

Fiction and Non-fiction

       Light copyediting corrects punctuation, grammar, usage, spelling, and styling and formatting inconsistencies.

       Medium copyediting includes the work of light copyediting, plus flags inconsistencies in content, voice, and tone; corrects non-parallel structure in text and headings; and flags and queries ambiguities.

       Heavy copyediting includes the work of medium copyediting, but instead of only flagging inconsistencies and ambiguities, heavy copyediting suggests recasts and revisions; eliminates wordiness; and smoothes transitions to improve the readability and flow of the text.

Poetry

       Basic poetry copyediting focuses on identifying unintentional ambiguities, styling and formatting inconsistencies, and errors in word usage.

Copyediting: $40 per hour

Developmental Editing

Fiction and Non-fiction

Developmental editing can start with consultation before the writing process begins, and during the writing process, proceed to discussion of ways to best communicate the message or improve plot and character development. It typically includes specific directions for restructuring and revising, such as identifying gaps in content or storyline and describing the needed text for the author to incorporate; restructuring headings, as needed, for consistency; and suggesting revisions to achieve the desired marketing focus and tone.

Poetry

Developmental editing includes the work of basic copyediting and typically starts with a consultation with the editors. The individualized process is customized to the poet's purpose and goals and offers suggestions to best convey the poet's voice and vision.

Developmental editing: $40 per hour or a fee based on project scope
